How to pick the most befitting jewelry with your Indian ensembles?

Take your Indian Ethnic Wear Store notches higher by pairing them with the right jewelry. Take clue from these smart tips to pick the most well suited jewellery with your Indian attire.

Have you ever heard a woman say, “I have enough jewelry.”? Well, that’s extremely unlikely, or should we say, impossible!

A wise man (maybe a woman) so rightly said that “A girl can never have enough jewelry!”

Right accessories, specifically jewelry enhances the whole appearance. When coordinated rightly, jewelry has the power to distract the onlookers off the flaws of a look. This means you can even get away with a missing style element, a passé look, or a so-so dress, if you use well-suited, trendy, scintillating jewels.

However, this sounds way easier said than done. Pairing ensembles with right jewelry is a challenge for most women, especially today, when there’s so much choice, which, invariably, leads to confusion.

This issue gets magnified when you get down to matching your Indian Ethnic ensembles with the right jewelry. It is way too easier to get lost in the huge variety that is available. Also, often, for many people Indian jewelry implies gaudy, shiny, golden, big baubles, while most others struggle with even basic coordination.

Tough call!

Well, basis our conversations with the women who love Indian Ethnic fashion to core, we bring you a few valuable suggestions that will help you make the perfect choices in jewelry to go with your ethnic outfits –

Assess your body type and face structure – and cherish it!

What looks great on your generous-bosomed friend may not look as dishy on your fragile, dainty shoulders and neckline! Get the clue?
Most women would go to lengths getting the best attire, as per their body type, but would forget to keep this vital basic in view, when planning jewels and accessories. Don’t do that! Here are few pointer, you must keep in mind –
  • Wear jewels that compliment your body shape and size. Extremely dainty pieces won’t look good on larger body shapes.
  • Overly big, ornate Chand-balis will make a broad face look even bigger.
  • Chokers with beads or colourful stones look fabulous on slender necks, but they are a NO-NO for stockier, shorter necks.
  • Long, dangling neck-pieces with loads of gold and kundan are a No-No for thin women. Similarly, thin (needle style) dangling earrings will further lengthen a long, thin face.
  • Girls with rounder, chubbier face may wear big gold/diamond studs and long chains/ dainty stones neckpieces – that hang low on the bust. Long, angled earrings are also great.
  • Oval faces can carry most jewelry styles. Hoops and chandelier earrings flatter oval faces. However, the neck shape, length and body shape must be considered.
  • Women with stocky, short body shape should consider making their earrings, bangles, bracelets and rings, the focus of their outfit. Necklaces are best avoided.
The Less is More rule
  • This is especially true for embellished, ornate Indian ethnic ensembles.
  • You don’t want to resemble a Christmas tree, right?
  • If you are wearing a heavily embroidered garment, it is a given that you should go easy on jewelry.
  • If you already are planning to carry scintillating chandelier earrings, go bare-necked, preferably.
  • If your neck-piece is a bold, big, gold piece in Kundan and ancient meena-kari, wear very small, stud earrings and leave your hair open.
  • If your hairdo is elaborate, and you wear hair jewels, avoid heavy earrings and close-to-neck chokers/ necklaces.
  • Focus on one part of your body/ face that you wish to highlight. Wear statement jewelry for that portion, and go easy on others.
  • If wearing Maang Teeka or Matha Patti, avoid heavy hair jewelry, decorative clips or very heavy earrings.
  • Do Not wear watch with bangles. A bracelet on one arm and an ornate watch in a color scheme matching your attire is fine.
Colour me right…
  • Match your jewelry’s colour tone to your complexion.
  • Indian complexions look better with muted silvers, oxidized finishes, copper gold tones and dulled, matt gold.
  • Play with coloured semi-precious or precious gems, but avoid overly large stones with ornate Indian dresses, unless you are confident of carrying them.
  • You may wear pops of colours to brighten your pastel or white outfits.
  • Do not overdo the ‘matching’ colour thing. If you are wearing a pink lehenga choli, you need not wear your entire jewelry in matching pink. Experiment and ‘mix and match’ a bit.

Is gold always golden?

  • Gold or golden jewelry is versatile, and goes well with most Indian attires, but do not go overboard with it, at any cost – unless you plan to look like a TV soap goddess.
  • Do not pair gold jewels with an attire that has silver embellishments. Pairing silver elements with gold in dress and vice versa is a fad not many people can carry.
  • Stark, shiny silvers and overly glistening golds are okay for television soaps, not real life.
  • A lot of heavy, traditional Indian jewelry pieces are gold/ golden. But, if gold is not your colour, feel free to pick from the vast array of variety available – from white gold to platinum jewelry.
  • Pair your pure silk, handloom silk sarees with traditional gold jewelry, in antique finishes.
  • Even with your dressy lehenga cholis, you may wear plain gold jewelry in contemporary designs to stand out.
Invest in Costume Jewelry and Daintier, Versatile pieces.
  • This is a trend that’s here to stay! You need not only buy Imitation Jewellery in heavy, ornate styles, even when buying real-jewels.
  • American diamond/ real diamond jewelry is lighter, and looks great with salwar suits and casual sarees.
  • Coloured baubles and beads necklaces look great with  sarees, lehenga cholis and more contemporary ethnic styles like palazzos, kurtis and Indo-Western fusion dresses.
  • You may not have a lot of real jewels, but you may continue to invest in pocket-friendly costume jewelry. Saree.com now has an entire section on costume jewelry that you can browse to pick the most alluring and interesting pieces to go with your wedding ensembles, trousseau collection or even regular Indian wear.
